OMI, known for his hit single “Cheerleader” and rising German DJ Felix Jaehn join forces for a single with all the makings of a hit, “Masterpiece.”
OMI and Felix Jaehn make quite a team. OMI is known for his no. 1 hit single, “Cheerleader” – you might’ve heard it somewhere. While Felix Jaehn doesn’t have a hit that’s quite as decorated, the German DJ is pretty beastly when it comes to production – see “Cool” featuring Marc E. Bassy and Gucci Mane. All you need to know is, these two dudes ‘do work’ on single, “Masterpiece.”
“Masterpiece” kicks off predictably, with a cliché opening dance riff, courtesy of guitar. It’s effective, but we’ve ‘been there, done that’ a number of times. Regardless, familiarity doesn’t inhibit excellent production, featuring thudding kick, slick hip-hop oriented drum programming, and later, a lovely palette of synths. OMI serves up lovely vocals. His tone is superb, tailor-made for this urban-infused, dance-pop cut.
Sure, “Masterpiece” isn’t the deepest song of 2018, but it definitely has hit-single’ written over it potentially. The pre-chorus is awesome:
“You looking good in every angle / Shine like the stars in the Venga / You got my heart saying damn girl / Damn girl.”
The chorus, well, it’s catchy, feel-good, and sexy while being totally inoffensive:
“‘Cause every time I look at you I’m looking at a masterpiece / If you’re trying to be perfect you don’t have to be / Put your body on my body and I’ll tell you honestly / When I look at you I’m looking at a masterpiece.”
Again, Jaehn’s palette of synths is worth mentioning, specifically during the instrumental solo between chorus and post-chorus. Also, worth noting, is the contrast on the bridge section, providing separation from the verses and choruses.
Final Thoughts
To reiterate the opening statement, OMI and Felix Jaehn make quite a team. “Masterpiece” may not be a literal masterpiece, but it’s a fun, catchy, worthwhile urban-dance-pop single. Go ahead and add this guilty pleasure to your playlist – you won’t regret it!
