Bring on the B-O-P-Z, like #SLAYYY! LGBTQ Bopz 🌈🎶 is a column t that embraces, highlights, and celebrates singles and tracks by LGBTQIA musicians.  On LGBTQ Bopz 🌈🎶we provide background info and insight into the respective musician(s), as well as analyze + go gaga over the bops being served up.  Furthermore, when the music dictates deeper, more transcendent discussion, we ensure the point is articulated to the fullest.  All styles of music are welcome and the BOPZ can be classics or brand-spanking new. So, without further ado, in the 27th edition of LGBTQ Bopz 🌈🎶 (2022), we highlight 🎵 “Pretty Boy” performed by 🎙 Omar Apollo.

Theme & Lyrics

Bitmoji Image“Pretty boy / Pretty like the ocean and the sky at night / And I fell in you / Right after we made love on a starry night.” What I personally love about Mexican American musician 🎙 Omar Apollo is the fact that he is true to himself in his music.  Rather than conforming or merely creating more linear, exclusively heterosexual-themed songs, Apollo is unafraid to deliver music that’s sexually fluid, and often, queer.  Everyone desires musicians to label themselves, but my question is, why is it so important? Omar makes it cool to be yourself, a place where society truly needs to evolve.  The point is, 🎵 “Pretty Boy” from 💿 Ivory (Marfil) is queer and it’s absolutely beautiful.

“‘Cause the way you talk, makes me undress / Think of times we can’t relive…” At this point, Omar Apollo has alluded to sexual experiences and relationships with men.  Honestly, wouldn’t it be surprising at this point if his music didn’t include such narratives.  In “Pretty Boy,” he recounts a past experience, one that seemed truly special.  “I just dream of you (dream of you),” he sings in the first verse, adding, “When you’re not around I picture you next to me / And it hurts to think that someone else might love you like I do.” The thing is, even though it’s clear that the perspective is from one male to another, it doesn’t matter.  These are relatable feelings regardless of sexual preference.

“Just know that I’m missing you

Stole my heart (Stole my heart) and made me run

You’re so beautiful (Your skin so smooth)

You stole my heart (Stole my heart) and made me run to you

Baby, it’s us.”

Final Thoughts 💭

pride heart burstIt’s so easy to fanboy Omar Apollo.  Sure, he’s incredibly easy on the eyes, but more importantly, he’s making music that’s true to himself.  True to himself, of course, means there are queer elements and that is dope.  I’ve featured Apollo in this column many times, and if he keeps making LGBTQ Bopz like 🎵 “Pretty Boy”, I have no doubt he’ll appear many more times.
