Rising ‘alternative’ artist Omar Apollo showcases his own distinct, unique style on the brief, but intriguing single, “Ignorin’” from his debut EP, ‘Stereo.’
Could Chicano artist Omar Apollo be the next big thing? Perhaps, perhaps. Apollo is from Hobart, Indiana, not exactly a hotbed for up-and-coming musicians. Nonetheless, according to an excellent article penned by Beverly Bryan (Remezcla) this self-taught musician has built a following, is clearly on the rise, and musically, has an incredibly distinct, eclectic style. For our purposes, and the single at hand, “Ignorin’,” we’ll label him as an alternative artist. That said, labels are overrated.
“Ignorin’” is quite a ride – understatement. The brief, two-and-a-half-minute track definitely has one thing working in its favor – vibe. Sigh, there’s something truly special about the sound that Omar Apollo assembles here. The production is one of the biggest pros with dusty, soulful drums, and a funky, laid-back groove. Early on, “Ignorin’” seems relatively straightforward, though it should be noted that it’s a bit hard to decipher where Apollo is going lyrically on the first verse. Things get wild on the rhythmic pre-chorus, which is sung in a tongue-n-cheek, baby-like voice.
I don’t think you dumb, you come to, ha
It’s a lovely morning
Fuck, I love your color, it’s so fun
Oh, is that your color?
Damn, they think I’m cool
I’m so icy huh, slip your number, call it.”
It’s kind of bizarre and unexpected, but definitely unique. The chorus starkly contrasts the pre-chorus with longer, smoother melodic lines.
“I hear you callin’
I’m just ignoring buddy
Don’t got your number
I ain’t the caring baby.”
Final Thoughts
“Ignorin’” marked my first experience with Omar Apollo. What an experience it was. It’s the type of record that leaves you searching for the right words to accurately describe it. Perhaps the short record didn’t ‘knock my socks off,’ but it definitely intrigued and piqued my interest in his debut project, Stereo.
