Scanning the Charts (6/5/21): Olivia Rodrigo Dominates the Billboard 200 with her highly anticipated debut album, SOUR.
SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. This column isnโt extensive, but rather short and sweet. This week, I picked out SIX notable observations from the Billboard 200 , and FIVE observations from the Billboard Hot 100
, with
Olivia Rodrigo dominating the Billboard 200 (
SOUR) and
BTS earning another no. 1 hit on the Hot 100 (
โButterโ).
Billboard 200
Didnโt we all see it coming, at least those of us who keep up with the pulse of the music industry?
Olivia Rodrigo dominates the Billboard 200 with her debut album,
SOUR. Honestly, thereโs nothing sour about the robust numbers Rodrigo put up to secure the no. 1 spot on the Billboard 200. Sheโ a force to be reckoned with, period.
Worth noting, Rodrigo knocks
Grammy-winning rapper
J. Cole out of the top spot. Donโt cry too much for Cole โ
The Off-Season only slips to no. 2.
Grammy winning alternative duo
Twenty One Pilots are always good for a top-five debut โ at least since
Blurryface.
Scaled and Icy launches at no. 3.
The final top-10 debut on the Billboard 200 comes from
42 Dugg, who bows at no. 8 with
Free Dem Boyz.
Two more albums debut in the top-20: pop musician
P!nk (
All I Know So Far: Setlist at no. 13) and country musician,
Blake Shelton (
Body Language, no. 18)
Lord Huron starts at no. 23 with their latest LP,
Long Lost. The band lays claim to the final debut in the top 40 with
Waterparksโ
Greatest Hits just missing the cut (no. 42).
Billboard Hot 100
Things donโt seem to be slowing down any for
BTS, who score another no. 1 hit on the Hot 100 with
โButterโ. โButterโ marks the
Grammy-nominated K-Pop boy bandโs fourth no. 1 single.
BTS knocked
Olivia Rodrigo out of the penthouse on the Hot 100. Donโt cry too much for Rodrigo, as sheโs making chart history with her level of success. This week, she has three songs in the top 10, and none of those three are named
โdrivers licenseโ, her former no. 1 single which sits at no. 11 this week!
โGood 4 uโ slips from no. 1 to no. 2;
โDรฉjร vuโ rises from no. 21 to no. 3;
โTraitorโ debuts at no. 9.
Up until no. 33, all of the debuts on the Hot 100 belonged to either BTS or Olivia Rodrigo.
Polo G and
Lil Wayne get in on the debut action with
โGANG GANGโ.
City Girls twerk their way to the 51st spot on the Hot 100 with their sexed-up single,
โTwerkulatorโ.
Making much less of a splash than
โMONTERO (Call Me by Your Name)โ (debuted at no. 1),
Lil Nas X sees
โSun Goes Downโ launch at no. 66.
