ODESZA, Loyal [Photo Credit: Ninja Tune]Featuring very few words, electronic music production duo ODESZA lets he grand instrumentals do the work on “Loyal,” their first new single of 2018.

ODESZA is back, continuing to make lives better with the electronic ear candy that they serve up. I can’t brag enough about how much I loved “Line of Sight” from their 2017, Grammy-nominated album, A Moment Apart.  On their latest single, “Loyal,” there are no credited guest vocals – it’s all on the production duo.

Notice how I mentioned that there are no credited guest vocals? That’s because “Loyal” has very few lyrics. The focus is on the instrumental backdrop by ODESZA. Upon hearing, it’s clear that the duo holds things down without a hitch.  There are lyrics, but, those featured lyrics play more of a role within the production.  Think of the vocals featured on the ‘chorus’ more like a synth as opposed to a lead vocal or melodic line.  Expectedly, the small number of words used are repetitive: “In my life, in my life / Feel better / In my life, in my life / I’m loyal now.”

Again, it is the backdrop – the soundscape – that makes “Loyal” a record that electronic music lovers will definitely want to be loyal to in regards to multiple listens.  ODESZA brilliantly uses incredibly rhythmic drums, including marching band drums to anchor the record down. Throughout the course of the record, there are plenty of ‘big’ sounds presented, including brassy, orchestral moments and various synths and programming.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, there isn’t much more to say about “Loyal.” As the rappers often say, ODESZA “do(es) the damn thing.” “Loyal” is an appealing soundscape that would definitely serve as a great soundtrack.
