On the 1st edition of Sunday Refresh, we’re uplifted by The University of Notre Dame Folk Choir performing the Brenda Moore classic, “Perfect Praise.”
Welcome to Sunday Refresh 🙏, a column that seeks to highlight inspirational songs to uplift the spirit. These tracks that appear on Sunday Refresh may or may not be faith-based or religious; the goal is for them to make you feel better – refreshed. So, for the 1st edition of Sunday Refresh, we highlight 🎵 “Perfect Praise (Live),” as performed by The University of Notre Dame Folk Choir, featuring Chris Dingman, Emorja Roberson, Godwin Louis, Ike Sturm, Karen Schneider and Mark McLean. J.J. Wright serves as the choir director.
Gospel gem 🎵 “Perfect Praise,” written by 🎙 Brenda Joyce Moore is a prime example of a truly perfect song – one that never grows old. Sometimes referenced as “Jesus is Excellent” or “Oh Lord, How Excellent,” this gem has been covered by numerous choirs and even arranged for marching band as well – pretty cool. The University of Notre Dame Folk Choir deliver a truly excellent rendition, recorded live in 2020, which appears on their album, 💿 Catch the Spirit (Live). Take one listen, and you should totally be spiritually refreshed. What makes this particular version so excellent? The awesome lead vocals by 🎙 Emorja Roberson is a huge selling point. Of course, beyond his lead, the Folk Choir provide great supporting vocals, with the harmonies fully locked in, while the instrumentalists all shine in their respective roles. You can tell just listening to this recording that this is indeed a favorite of the University choir – they do it justice by all means.

Also, check out an adventurous, exhilarating take of “Oh Lord, How Excellent” (aka “Perfect Praise”) by the FBCG (First Baptist Church of Glenarden) with gospel standout Anthony Brown (best known for Anthony Brown & group therAPy). This particular performance has a strong case as the best version yet! That tempo change is 🔥!!!
What about that Miles College performance? EXCELLENT! HBCU baby!
