North Ship, It Looked Like Rain | Album Review

orth Ship, a musical pairing from Copenhagen, have once again stunned us with their new album, “It Looked Like Rain”. This album, which is out now is a journey through a plethora of indie sounds that push boundaries and spark imaginations.

North Ship is made up of Tom Golzen (vocals, guitar, songwriting) and drummer Francis Nørgaard Jensen. They combine programmed sounds with live guitars and drums to make captivating soundscapes which you are unlikely to find elsewhere. 

The album kicks off with “It Looked Like Rain.” It is a beautiful start and the song builds slowly into a crescendo of guitars and drums, showing how well the pair can create immersive sounds. It also has a polished feel but with original energy from the recording process still appearing for good measure. 

There are many standout tracks on the album and “Plastic House” shows how good the band is at mixing styles. There are clear synth wave references in the song, but it also has an indie psychedelia vibe that keeps everything fresh. Also, on this track Golzen’s songwriting skills really shine, painting vivid pictures that go well with the complex instruments.

“Good And Gone” is another example of North Ship’s wide range of sounds. Its driving beat and introspective words take it into post-punk territory. One thing that stands out is Jensen’s drumming, which gives the track a strong base that lets Golzen’s guitar work soar.

One amazing things about “It Looked Like Rain” is how well it stays together even as it moves through different musical styles. Even though each track is different, they all fit together to make a whole. This is a big accomplishment that says a lot about North Ship’s artistic perspective and how well they do their work.
