Norah Jones rolls out one final pre-release single ahead of ‘Day Breaks’, “Tragedy.” “Tragedy” is a ‘three-peat’, amplifying anticipation for the album.
“Tragedy” serves as the final pre-release single for Day Breaks, the first solo album from Norah Jones in four years (Little Broken Hearts). “Tragedy” follows two other pre-release singles, “Carry On” and “Flipside” Once more, Jones impresses with her unique style and incredible musicianship. Day Breaks is setting up exceptionally well for the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter.
The record opens with soulful vibes, thanks to a combo of piano, organ, bass, and drums. The sound mixes singer/songwriter, jazz, soul and beyond. It is eclectic to the nth degree. Jones is at her best here, delivering a vocal performance characterized by its subtlety. As always, the laziness and richness of her voice create a formidable combination.
“Tragedy” features truly lovely vocal harmonies, specifically appearing on the titular lyric: “It’s a tragedy.” Jones surprises, showing off some range (towards the end). These higher pitched vocals are a welcome contrast to her familiar lower register. Surprises have been what has made her latest promo campaign intriguing. Norah really seems to be selling herself, something that didn’t happen as much on Little Broken Hearts in 2012.
Final Thoughts
Once more, Day Breaks seems like a return to form for Norah Jones. “Tragedy” successfully blends numerous styles, showcasing Jones’ eclectic nature and premiere musicianship. It is well written, produced, and beautifully performed. Singer-songwriter fans should be pleased with the lyrics. Jazz and blues enthusiasts will enjoy the bluesy vibe, while pop and soul fans will fall in love with her distinct voice all over again. Clearly, there’s something for everyone; nothing tragic in the least.
