Norah Jones, Day Breaks [Photo Credit: Blue Note]With latest single “Flipside,” Norah Jones delivers one of the more distinct songs of her career.  Jazzy Norah is back without question.

Following a four-year hiatus between solo albums (excluding collaborative effort Foreverly), Norah Jones returns with her sixth studio album, Day Breaks. Previously, Jones issued promo single “Carry On”, which marked a return to her jazz roots. Latest single “Flipside” kicks things up another notch, easily distinguishing itself from the promo single and the rest of Jones’ catalogue.

“Flipside” opens with rhythmic piano, which transforms into abstract-sounding jazz harmonies.  Throughout its course, there’s a great sense of intensity. Dashes of organ amplify the soulfulness.  “Flipside” has a consistent enigmatic quality, which proves to be an excellent touch. Among the best moments is when Norah “belts it out” on the chorus: “I can’t stand when you tell me to get back…”

Final Thoughts

“Flipside” is a fantastic look for Norah Jones.  It starkly contrasts single “Carry On” showcasing a more assertive Jones. Excellently produced, showcasing more of Jones’ jazzy roots, “Flipside” once more confirms that Jones is returning to her swagger of the past.
