Polarizing rapper Nicki Minaj looks to reclaim (or solidify) her perch atop the female rap game with the hard-nosed, unapologetic banger, “Barbie Tingz.”
There’s good news and bad news – starting this review off with a BOOM! The good news is that Nicki Minaj is back with new music! The bad news is that her return didn’t come without its share of controversy, sigh. Controversial comeback aside, the people are definitely giving Minaj what she wants – press. The timing of the comeback seems strategic (*didn’t the Cardi B album just arrive*) but whatever, she’s back with two new singles – “Barbie Tingz” and “Chun-Li”– and that’s all that matters.
“Barbie Tingz” commences with unique, synth percussion. Eventually, the beat becomes plum crazy, giving the record its best feature – aside from Nicki Minaj of course. The drum programming is a mix between old-school and new school. Even with its classic cues, the beat feels fresh and is perfect fuel for Nicki’s fire. As in the past, she does wonders with the minimalist, skeletal record.
Focusing on Nicki Minaj as opposed to the beat, she’s chocked-full of energy. She’s ready to throw punches. She doesn’t reinvent herself, let alone the wheel, but she’s hard-nosed and unapologetic. Notably, going back to the beat, it works hand in hand with the degree of toughness exhibited by the rhymes. Particularly when Minaj continues to reference bitches and drop f-bombs, the beat is at its most intense.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Nicki Minaj makes a compelling comeback with “Barbie Tingz.” While this is a record that’s comparable to “Beez in the Trap” (Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded), it’s not quite as elite. The oomph and the raunchiness are fully intact, and Minaj seems ready to ‘reclaim the throne.’
