Irish pop singer-songwriter Niall Horan returns with a respectable if safe, middle-of-the-road pop single in “Dinner Party.”
“Dinner Party” commences with a folksy, soft rock, pop/rock sound. This isn’t the flashiest or most innovative musical accompaniment – nothing brand-new – but it suits Niall Horan well. Horan delivers a pleasant, smooth, and well-rounded vocal performance. It’s no powerhouse performance, but respectable through and through. The melodies are simple but beautiful. Lyrically, the verses tell the story (see verse one, excerpted earlier). The chorus, unsurprisingly, is the most memorable section – the one to beat:
“Crashing lights, when you first saw me
Yeah, I met you at a dinner party
Chandeliers, 2 A.M. coffee
Yeah, I met you at a dinner party.”
All in all, “Dinner Party” is fine – totally innocuous. Niall Horan sings well, and the music and songwriting are pleasant. BUT… it simply doesn’t move the needle. Horan has recorded similar songs in the past. Also, some of his songs have been far more exciting and memorable during his lucrative solo career. Fans will likely appreciate it more than casual listeners. It’s a bit middle-of-the-road for me.
