It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.  It is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, that ONE hit earned them recognition. So, in the ninth edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2026), we dive into “99 Luftballons”, the one-hit wonder by Nena.

“Denkst du vielleicht grad an mich? / Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich / Von 99 Luftballons / Und, dass sowas von sowas kommt.”
Oh mein Gott! Okay… what does that mean? Translated in English, Nena (Gabriele Susanne Kerner, b. 1960), who served as the frontwoman of Nena, sings, “Are you thinking of me right now? / Then I’ll sing a song for you / About ninety-nine balloons / And how one thing leads to another.” The lyrics appear in the first verse of the 1980s classic, “99 Luftballons”. “99 Luftballons” is the sixth track from the German band’s 1983 album, Nena. “99 Luftballons” (“99 Balloons”) is one of the rare non-English songs to reach the top 10 on the pop charts. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.  The single was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. This marked Nena, and Nena’s only hit in the United States, making her/the band a one-hit wonder. Carlo Karges and Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen wrote “99 Luftballons.” Manfred Praeker and Reinhold Heil produced it.

The synths are vibrant, the guitar is punchy and ripe, and the drum groove is electrifying.  Nena sounds commanding, singing the German lyrics expressively and bringing the tuneful melodies to life.  As infectious as “99 Luftballons” is, it’s also a deep, thought-provoking song. In the first verse, excerpted earlier, Nena begins the story about these 99 balloons “on their way to the horizon.” This proves to be a big, big problem. In the second verse, these balloons are mistaken for UFOs. Uh-oh! In the third, 99 jet planes enter the mix, with Star Trek references (“Each one was a great warrior / They thought they were Captain Kirk”).  As for the balloons, they cause a stir with the ‘neighbors,’ prompting shots to be fired… Keep in mind, this is in the 1980s, during the tense Cold War.  The fourth and final verse is key.  It grows more descriptive about the war:

German 🇩🇪 English Translation
“99 Kriegsminister

Streichholz und Benzinkanister

Hielten sich für schlaue Leute

Witterten schon fette Beute

Riefen: „Krieg!“, und wollten Macht

Mann, wer hätte das gedacht?

Dass es einmal so weit kommt

Wegen 99 Luftballons.”

“Ninety-nine defense ministers

Matches and gasoline cans

Thought they were clever people

Saw fat prey ahead

Shouted, “War!” and wanted power

Man, who would have thought?

That it would ever come to this

Because of ninety-nine balloons.”

Nena keeps returning to the fact that all of these things were set in motion because of 99 balloons. The results are devastating, capped off by the outro, where she sings (translated), “Today I walk my rounds / See the world lying in ruins / Found a balloon / I think of you and let it fly.” “99 Luftballons” is one of those memorable, creative records that you have even more respect for once you dig in and analyze what Nena was referencing. Sure, this was her only hit stateside, but man, oh, man, was it a sensational, once-in-a-lifetime hit.
