Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats releases “Coolin’ Out,” the third and final single issued in advance of their sophomore album, ‘Tearing at the Seams.’
Following the success of single “S.O.B.” from their 2015, self-titled debut album, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats return with Tearing at the Seams. Comprised of 14 tracks in its deluxe edition, the band released three advance singles, including the most recent, “Coolin’ Out,” featuring Lucius.
“Coolin’ Out” begins superbly with a robust, soulful bass line. This piques the listener’s interest (and foot and head motions) from the jump. Following the initial statement by bass and a lead-in drum riff, bass exits, and it’s solely piano, dusty, soulful drums, and nuanced vocals by Nathaniel Rateliff. After the first half of the first verse, horns join mix. The result is a sound that hails straight out of the vintage soul bag of tricks. Additionally, backing vocals, singing nonsensical syllables and words (not scat per se), adds even more character.
The chorus is the crowning achievement.
“I said, baby, come on / We’ll be dancin’ and havin’ fun / Tell your mama that you’re leavin’ home / And your friends are gonna come along.”
At the top of both verses, Rateliff highlights the titular line: “I’ve been coolin’ out, baby.” Beyond the aforementioned backing vocals, they appear in other spots throughout “Coolin’ Out.” Ultimately, they amplify the soul and overall authenticity. An extended fade-out on the outro (“I’ve been coolin’ out, baby”) is a sensational way to close an excellent retro-soul effort. The fade out lasts about 40 seconds.
Final Thoughts
Arguably, “Coolin’ Out” is the best advance single from Tearing at the Seams. Vocally, Nathaniel Rateliff remains a beast. The Night Sweats are none too shabby themselves. What truly stands out beyond the vocals and vibe are the excellent instrumental moments, including the horns and specifically, the guitar solo.
