Originally poised to be a slow release date for new music, April 14, 2017, became promising with the announcement of a new Kendrick Lamar album.
Cutting to the chase, April 14, 2017, isn’t a great date for new music releases (*cue up sad-faced emoticon NOW). Where April 7, 2017, was stacked with new releases, the record labels and artists dropped the ball this week. The crème de la crème is easily The Fate of the Furious: The Album, the accompanying soundtrack to the film of the same title. Save for a surprise release or an under promoted major release, April 14, 2017 is skinny on blockbusters. That was the original narrative, but then Kendrick Lamar announced something special on April 7, 2017 – the release of his new album on April 14, 2017.
1. Kendrick Lamar
New Album (TBA)
Interscope
Kendrick Lamar is the star of the show on April 14, 2017. Unfortunately, in regards to hyping up his album, there’s very little info. The new album is comprised of 14 tracks, including single, “HUMBLE.” “The Heart Part 4,” the first single he issued in 2017 doesn’t appear to be on the album. Beyond that, this new album from Kendrick is a total surprise. Still, this is the crème de la crème of April 14, by a mile.
2. Various Artists
The Fate of the Furious
Artist Partner Group
The Fast and Furious series of movies seems to be that never-ending franchise. Accompanying the many films themselves, are soundtracks, anchored by rap. The Fate of the Furious is the latest installment of the series, The Fate of the Furious: The Album accompanying it. Comprised of 14 songs, multiple singles were released ahead of the album. Star-studded, featured artists on the compilation include 2 Chainz, G-Eazy, Kehlani, Migos, and Young Thug among others.
3. Little Dragon
Season High
Loma Vista / Concord
Swedish electronic collective Little Dragon returns with its fifth album, Season High. Season High arrives nearly three years after Nabuma Rubberband (May 13, 2014). Comprised of 10 tracks, singles issued ahead of Season High were “High” and “Sweet.”
