Grammy-winning R&B singer/songwriter Muni Long delivers a relatable matter regarding the universal theme of love on “Delulu.”
“Delulu” commences with a rhythmic instrumental intro. The rhythmic synths recur throughout. Early on, Muni Long shows off her smooth pipes, performing in her sultry lower and middle registers. The melodies are rhythmic during the verses, where her delusion is clear: “I’ll block and unblock you whеn I want somebody to talk to / Little do you know, I attach when you detach.” The theme and lyrics are familiar, encompassing matters of the heart. Love is universal, hence, never grows old or stale. Long delivers powerful vocals during the delusional chorus, showing off impressive melisma:
“Delusional, delusional
Thinking I could have it all
Thinking I’d avoid the fall
I’m delusional, delusional
Thinking I could have it all
Thinking I’d avoid the fall
I’m delulu, delulu over you.”
I love the addition of background vocals post-second verse. The bridge distinguishes itself from the other sections. “Baby, if I feel crazy, it’s because of you,” she sings, and continues, “Don’t pick up the phone like you’re supposed to / I’m taking it personal.” Noted. I love the key change that appears after the bridge, leading into the final chorus. A fine track overall, “Delulu” is a grower. It gets better and better, packing more of a punch after a couple of listens. Muni Long is gifted.
