In the January 2018 edition of our ‘monthly music shopping list,’ new albums from Camila Cabello and Fall Out Boy are the most highly-anticipated.  

New year, new life, new things! Out with the old and in with the new! Rather than drop the weekly music shopping lists of old, we usher in a new, monthly music shopping list, filled with the biggest albums to potentially degrade that cash in your wallet (or credit/debit). Here’s a brief overview of the four release weeks in January.

As always, January starts off slow, and that’s the case with January 5, 2018, which features no big-name, notable releases – at least as of publication time. If money is tight, then, you may be able to save it this particularly Friday of the new year…just saying. January 12, 2018 is a better-rounded new music Friday, led by the highly-anticipated debut album by Camila Cabello, Camila. The most thrilling release week/date begins January 19, 2018, which sees the delayed release of Fall Out Boy’s M A N I A come to fruition, as well as the sophomore album by Charlie Puth, Voicenotes.  Finally, January 26, 2018 is quiet, much like January 5. You may be able to save a penny, though Craig David might entice you with The Time is Now.

As referenced in the overview, the early part of January is blasé to the nth degree.  While there are a few new releases, there are no big-named artists dropping highly-anticipated albums.  Below you will find some random projects, some of which arrive prior to Friday, January 5.

Camila Cabello is the crème de la crème of Friday, January 12, 2018 album releases (Camila).  Even so, Black Veil Brides fans should be excited for Vale, alternative enthusiasts should swoon over the return of BØRNS (Blue Madonna), while the SoundCloud crowd and youngsters will likely make a star out of Lil Skies.

1. Camila Cabello, Camila

Epic

In 2017, Camila Cabello focused on building her solo career, distancing herself from her former group, Fifth Harmony.  By the end of the year, the pop singer finally found her surefire hit with “Havana”, which appears on her debut album, Camila. Only “Havana” makes the cut on her debut album, following numerous singles (“Crying in the Club” and “OMG”).  In addition to the delightful Cuban single, singles “Never Be the Same” and “Real Friends” precede Camila.

2. Black Veil Brides, Vale

Following a three-year-plus hiatus, Black Veil Brides return with its fifth album, Vale.  Vale follows the band’s 2014 effort, Black Veil Brides, as well as frontman Andy Six’s (aka Andy Black/Andy Biersack) 2016 solo album, The Shadow Side.  Comprised of 12 tracks, singles “The Last One,” “When They Call My Name”, “The Outsider” and “My Vow” were released in advance of the album.

3. BØRNS, Blue Madonna

BØRNS returns with his sophomore album, Blue Madonna. The last full-length encounter we had with the Michigan bred, Cali-based alternative musician was Dopamine, released in 2015.  Comprised of 12 songs, four singles were issued in advance of Blue Madonna: “God Save Our Young Blood,” “Faded Heart,” “Sweet Dreams,” and “I Don’t Want U Back.”

4. Lil Skies, Life of a Dark Rose

Ah, the arrival of yet another SoundCloud rapper.  This time, it’s 19-year old Lil Skies, who drops his debut project, Life of a Dark Rose. Life of a Dark Rose is comprised of 14 songs.  Singles “Red Roses” (Ft. Landon Cube), “Lust,” “Signs of Jealousy,” and “Nowadays” (Ft. Landon Cube) were released in advance of the album.

5. Anderson East, Encore

Elektra 

Eclectic singer/songwriter Anderson East returns with his sophomore album, Encore.  Encore follow’s the Alabamian’s 2015 debut, Delilah.  Comprised of 11 songs, singles “King for a Day” and “All on My Mind” were issued in advance of the album.

The question is, why wasn’t the most jam-packed Friday in January spread out a bit more throughout the month. Both January 5 and January 26 were begging for more ‘meat’ in the new music department.  Nonetheless, Fall Out Boy is the acts to beat this week.  Still, there’s something for everybody, save for a notable rap release.

1. Fall Out Boy, M A N I A

Island

Originally, Fall Out Boy was set to return in September 2017. Unfortunately for the band, the reception for their latest album, M A N I A, was cool, thanks especially to their off-putting promo single, “Young and Menace.” Nonetheless, the album sees the light of day on January 19, 2018.  Comprised of 10 tracks, in addition to “Young and Menace,” singles “Champion”, “HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON’T”, and “The Last of the Real Ones” were released far in advance of the project.

2. Devin Dawson, Dark Horse

Has country music found its next star with Devin Dawson? Perhaps.  The 28-year old musician releases his debut album, Dark Horse.  Comprised of 12 tracks, singles “All on Me”, “Asking for a Friend,” “I Don’t Care Who Sees,” “Secondhand Hurt,” and “Dark Horse” were issued in advance of the album.

3. LANCO, Hallelujah Nights

Sony Music Entertainment

Nashville country collective LANCO makes their major label debut with Hallelujah Nights. Comprised of 11 tracks, singles “Born to Love You,” “Long Live Tonight,” “Greatest Love Story,” “We Do,” and “Trouble Maker” were issued in advance of the album.

 

4. EDEN, vertigo

Astralwerks

22-year old alternative/electronic musician EDEN (Johnathon Ng) releases his first full-length project, vertigo.  Ng’s 2016 effort I think you think too much of me was only comprised of seven tracks. In advance of Vertigo, comprised of 13 tracks, singles “start//end”, “crash,” and “gold” were released.

5. Of Mice & Men, Defy

Rise

Southern Cal metalcore collective OF Mice & Men returns with Defy, their first album in more than a year (Cold World, September 2016).  Comprised of 12 tracks, singles “Defy,” “Back to Me,” “Unbreakable,” and “Warzone” were issued in advance of Defy.

6. Black Label Society, Grimmest Hits

Entertainment One

Metal vets Black Label Society come back roaring in 2018 with Grimmest Hits.  Grimmest Hits marks the collective’s first new album since 2014 (Catacombs of the Black Vatican). Comprised of 12 tracks, singles “All That Once Shined” and “Room of Nightmares” arrived in advance of the album.

7.Phillip Phillips, Collateral

Interscope

American Idol winner Phillip Phillips returns with his third studio album, Collateral.  Collateral arrives nearly four years after Behind the Light (2014).  Comprised of 12 tracks, singles “Magnetic,” “Miles,” and “Dance with Me” arrived in advance of the album.

1. Craig David, The Time Is Now

Insanity

For 36-year old English R&B artist Craig David, The Time Is Now, or so the title of his new album suggests. Back in the early 00s, David made an impact stateside with his albums Born to Do It and Slicker Than Your Average.  Since then, however, he’s been irrelevant – no offense. Comprised of 15 tracks in its deluxe version, singles “Heartline,” “For the Gram,” and “I Know You” (Ft. Bastille) were issued in advance The Time Is Now.
