Montell Fish, Stay (With Me). | Music Lifts

In the 3^rd edition of Music Lifts (2024), we’re uplifted by Montell Fish performing his 2019, Christian single, “Stay (With Me).”

Welcome to Music Lifts , a column that seeks to highlight songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 3^rd edition of Music Lifts (2024), we highlight “Stay (With Me).” as performed by Montell Fish.

“I know You will stay with me through it all / Ever You will wait for me, oh, my Lord.” Yes, Montell Fish, yes.  His faith is elevated – through the roof – on his 2019 single, “Stay (With Me).”. “Stay (With Me).” is a Christian single, with Fish acknowledging the mercifulness and omniscience of The Most High, God. Despite a five-minute-plus runtime, “Stay (With Me).” is built on lyrical repetition.  Likewise, the music, which is engaging, is also minimal by design – piano and a fabulous, rhythmic beat anchor the record.

The repetition, coupled with the sincere and pleasant vocals of Montell Jordan, entice. The repetition represents professing and clinging to faith – affirming God’s greatness.  While much of the song is based on the above-mentioned lyrics, there is a change of pace within the final minute and a half.  The groove disappears, with Fish accompanied merely by piano.  On this outro, he seems to speak as God: “Whenever you call my name / I’ll come / I’ll come to you, child /… Oh, I’ll come / I’ll come / For my child.” The big takeaway from “Stay (With Me).” is, God’s got you! Now that’s encouraging!
