In the 155th edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Homosexuality” by Modern Rocketry.
The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez! Throwback Vibez is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. The records that grace this column are older, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re ancient – no fossils 🦴! All genres of music are welcome. In the 155th edition of Throwback Vibez (2025), we recollect and reflect on “Homosexuality” performed by Modern Rocketry.
“Sitting in a Paris disco / With a rocket in my hand / Just flew in from San Francisco / Will he take me as I am?” A 🚀 or a 🍆 ? That seems to be the question! The answer is the latter, DUH! Gotta love context clues! Anyways, Modern Rocketry was an obscure, short-lived, hi-NRG disco band featuring Ken Kessie. Their homosexually driven “Homosexuality” was released in 1985, commencing their self-titled album. The song is most readily available on their 1996 album, Get Ready. Given its title and the lyrics excerpted above, the gay vibes are easily perceptible. Modern Rocketry is accurate when it asserts, “Love will find a way.”
If anything, “Homosexuality” gets gayer as it progresses. That’s sort of the expectation, right? Right! Modern Rocketry goes “cruising in a Brooklyn disco / With a trick from Amsterdam,” and “got lost on Fire Island / Found my daddy in the can.” Oh, snap! We listen and we don’t judge! The chorus sums things up:
“Homosexuality
(Yes, sir!)
Do you wanna get next to me?
Homosexuality
(Yes, sir!)
Anything to fill your needs.”
Emphasis on the fill part 🤭 🤫 😈. Ultimately, “Homosexuality” is a spicy, surefire vibe… in more ways than one, depending on your sexual preferences 😉. This mid-1980s joint is slickly produced, characterized by its relentless rhythm, bright, dynamic synths, and a groove that is a surefire catalyst to hit the club, dancefloor, and find some naughty fun 😈. The vocal performance matches the energy of the ornate, picturesque instrumental. Hearing this more obscure oldie for the first time, it deserved much more attention. Sure, it is more niche than mainstream, but it is an impressive song, nonetheless.
