elcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff! There’s a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  In the 32nd edition of 5ive Songs (2022), we select five songs that are associated with MISTAKES in some form or fashion.  Okay, let’s get into it!

 1. Sub Urban, “Uh-Oh” (Ft. BENEE)

💿 HIVE • 🏷 Warner • 📅 2022

Sub Urban, HIVE [📷 : Warner]A young twenty-something named 🎙 Sub Urban (Daniel Virgil Maisonneuve) is doing a nice job daring to be different. His debut album, 💿 HIVE, showcases immense potential.  Throughout HIVE  there’s no shortage of effort, talent, and unique songs, all of which Sub Urban produces or co-produces.

uh oh“Uh-oh, uh-oh

Uh-oh, you made a mistake

… Tell me things that can’t be true.”

Among the most fun records from HIVE is 🎵 “Uh Oh!” featuring 🎙 BENEE.  Expectedly, it is the titular lyric that fuels an infectious chorus you won’t possibly get unstuck in your head! Beyond the chorus, the approach is dark and mysterious – that’s how Maisonneuve rolls folks.  He performs the first verse, with BENEE supplying the darkness in the second verse.  Make no mistake about it – this is a bop.

2. Maroon 5, “Beautiful Mistakes”(Ft. Megan Thee Stallion)

💿 JORDI🏷 Interscope • 📅 2021

Maroon 5, JORDI [📷: Interscope]On 🎵 “Beautiful Mistakes” (💿 JORDI, 2021) 🎙 Maroon 5 tapped 🎙 Megan Thee Stallion for the assist.  M5 has truly been purely a pop collective for a while (or an🎙 Adam Levine solo act). “Beautiful Mistakes” continues to find the ‘band’ embracing ultra-sleek, modern pop.

oopsAs always, Levine sings well, even with ample vocal processing. Melodically, “Beautiful Mistakes” is tuneful enough without being game-changing.  Maroon 5 does muster up a catchy chorus, aimed squarely at the pop crowd.  Megan Thee Stallion provides a tame but rhythmic verse that flows respectably. She also incorporates some singing, complementing the melodic vibe of this cut.  Still, she’s at her best when sexed-up and unapologetic AF. Ultimately, “Beautiful Mistakes” uses the formula Maroon 5 has employed for years.  It’s enjoyable enough without being innovative or transcendent.

3. GIVĒON, “Favorite Mistake”

When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time 🏷 Epic / With Not So Fast LLC • 🗓 2021

GIVĒON, When It's All Said and Done... Take Time [📷: Epic]🎙 GIVĒON (Giveon Evans) gets scandalous on 🎵 “Favorite Mistake,” a surefire highlight from his 2021 album, 💿 When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time. On “Favorite Mistake,” the 🏆 Grammy nominee is hooking up with his ‘side piece,’ going to whatever lengths he needs to secure their rendezvous.  “No parking in LA,” he sings in one instance, continuing, “So I’ma send a Uber to your place.” Ooh, wee Mr. Evans!

i have made a mistakeGIVĒON admits it’s wrong, and she knows it’s wrong too.  Regardless, the connection between them ultimately is too enticing and tempting 😈.  So, with temptation just too tempting to yield as the beloved church hymn urges, “This is [indeed] my favorite mistake.”  Evans penned and produced “Favorite Mistake” alongside 🎼 ✍ 🎛 Rodrigo Barahona and 🎼 ✍ 🎛 Sevn Thomas.

4. Yung Gravy, “oops!”

💿 Gasanova • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2020

Yung Gravy, Gasanova [📷: Republic]“Ayy, Supercalifragilisticexpiali dope shit / Supercalifragilis-, my ex be on some ho shit” Ah, 💿 Gasanova indeed 🎙 Yung Gravy! Obviously, you should take any record that begins with such absurd, ridiculous lyrics with a grain of salt. What I’m saying is, this 2020, gold-certified hit by the rapper should is NOT transcendent. Was it a mistake for him to drop this joint? Of course NOT!

Bitmoji Image“Oops!” is utterly ridiculous, but it’s also ridiculously fun.  Yung Gravy, unsurprisingly, presents himself as an fuckboy, which isn’t uncommon in the genre.  In this particular case, he brags in the chorus, “Oops! Baby / Fuck up on your bitch, like oopsie daisy / Never knew that was your boo, baby / Hit it five times in the coupe Mercedes, whoopsie daisy, yeah.” ‘Five times,’ huh Yung Gravy? Must’ve been good… Sex goes well beyond the chorus as the Minnesota rapper drops numerous salacious lines in the second verse including, “Lil bitch, I’m happy and I know it, so I clap them fuckin’ cheeks,” and how about, “My neck, my back, got your momma on my sack.” Geezus!

5. Blu Cantrell, “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)”

💿 So Blu • 🏷 Arista • 📅 2001

Blu Cantrell, So Blu [📷: Arista]“While he was schemin’ / I was beamin’ in the Beamer just steamin’ / Can’t believe that I caught my man cheatin’ / So, I found another way to make him pay for it all.” Oh, snap 🫰🏿, 🎙 Blu Cantrell! The R&B singer broke through big time with 🎵 “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)”.  The 2001 gem appears on her debut album, 💿 So Blu. Make no mistake about it, “Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!)” was a gargantuan hit, peaking at no. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and helping So Blue secure gold certification. The record samples Frank Sinatra (🎵 “The Boy’s Night Out”), giving it some jazziness for a contemporary R&B joint.  “Hit ‘Em Up Style” was produced by 🎛 Dallas Austin.

Bitmoji ImageSo, what’s the premise? Basically, Blu’s no-good man is cheating on her and she makes him pay by spending his money! Essentially, she’s a woman scorned but she’s not leaving empty-handed (“(Oops!) For all the lies you told / This is what you’re owed”).  In the second verse, she sells his stuff, pays the bills late, and puts on a show to make him cease his cheating ways.  Of course, nothing is more effective than the chorus, which after more than two decades, remains potent:

“Hey ladies, when ya man wanna get buck wild

Just go back and hit ’em up style

Get your hands on his cash and

Spend it to the last dime for all the hard times

Oh, when you go, then everything goes

From the crib to the ride and the clothes

So you better let ’em know that

If he mess up, you gotta hit ’em up.”
