In the 19th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2024), we highlight “Mrs. Right” performed by Mindless Behavior.
It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy 💯! On 1 Hit WONDERful, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician. To be fair, it is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, it’s that ONE hit that earned them recognition. So, in the 19th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful (2024) we dive into “Mrs. Right”, the one-hit wonder by Mindless Behavior and Diggy Simmons.
“Where is Mrs. Right? / I gotta find her.” Sometimes, Top-40 success can elude a one-hit wonder. In other words, not all one-hit wonders touch the top of the pop charts! For defunct R&B collective Mindless Behavior, their sole entry on the pop charts was “Mrs. Right”, which peaked at no. 72 on the Billboard Hot 100. On “Mrs. Right,” Mindless Behavior gets an assist from Diggy (Diggy Simmons) who also earned his sole entry on the pop charts. The sleek single, the 11th track on the 2011 album, #1 Girl, was produced by Walter Millsap III, Candice Nelson, Gregory Watts, Nathaniel Williams, and John Millsap. The synths and the banging beat were fresh AF back in 2011.
Prodigy performed the lead vocals on “Mrs. Right,” performing the first and second verses. He has ample swagger as he praises this girl. “Sassy little thing, like, like the way you talk / Heard you got the goods, go ahead, show ‘em off,” he sings in the first verse. In the second verse, he famously asserts, “London in the spring, Paris in the fall / We don’t discriminate, girls know we love ‘em all.” Still, despite meeting some good girls, he wants to know at the end of the verse, “But where she at? Where she at?” Of course, the section to beat is the chorus, performed by all of Mindless Behavior:
“Where is Mrs. Right? I gotta see her
Travel all across the world just to meet her
Get me on a flight, I gotta see her
Travel all across the world just to meet her.”
Diggy gets in on the one-hit-wonder action in a brief interlude before the second verse by Prodigy. He does his heavy spitting in the third verse: “I predict one day we’ll be together, I’m a psychic.” Clairvoyance, huh? And, just how awesome is ‘Mrs. Right’? “I know you an angel so maybe I should look outer space.” Ooh-wee! A surefire banger, it is disappointing that “Mrs. Right” only spent 10 weeks on the pop charts and never ascended higher. Mindless Behavior and Diggy deserved better!
