Mike Williams, Feels Like Yesterday © Spinnin' RecordsRising Dutch DJ/producer Mike Williams, cooks up a mean dance joint on “Feels Like Yesterday.” The 21-year-old is assisted by singer Robin Valo.

The youth are on fire! Electronic dance music (EDM) continues to be on the uptick. 21-year-old Dutch DJ, record producer, musician, and remixer Mike Williams is part of that movement.  Listeners should be glad to have him, judging by his hit-making abilities.  Exhibit A is single “Feels Like Yesterday,” featuring fellow Norwegian singer Robin Valo.

“Feels Like Yesterday” sounds bright, set in a major key. The record features excellent pop production touches at the onset – sigh, that signature pop electronic guitar! Only later, post-chorus does “Feels Like Yesterday” bust into its dance persona. Backtracking before the drop Valo delivers beautiful, optimistic, and sunny vocals.  Throughout the course of the record, he sounds incredibly assertive and in command.  He reminisces on past love:

“We used to set sail

In the morning when the sky was blue

Just living for the thrill

And when times got rough, I could call on you.”

Following the verse, eventually Valo keys in on the titular lyric, which serves as the chorus essentially.  The aforementioned drop follows. Mike Williams leads up to the big moment with a grand crescendo that incorporates pummeling drums and hard synths.  Post-drop, the record really transforms.  Rather than sticking with the major-key, optimistic script, it highlights the relative minor key, which is unexpected.  Then again, reading through the lyrics, some negativity was bound to happen.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Mike Williams, assisted by a confident Robin Valo, gets it done on “Feels Like Yesterday.” This is an assertive track, with the build-up to the drop being one of its biggest selling points.  #Epic.
