Ah, it’s time to get cozy and cover up! In COVERS, we highlight a musician or band covering songs by another musician (likely a popular musician). COVERS focuses solely on the musician who covers.  It is open to established musicians and musicians who may not be as well-known. In the 36th edition of COVERS (2024), Mike Taveira delivers a compelling rendition of “Linger”, originally performed by The Cranberries.

Now that that’s out of my system 😮‍💨, let’s talk about his beautiful music, which is his claim to fame.  Taveira, who has been releasing bops for years, dropped str8_summer in August 2024.  The six-song EP concludes with a familiar tune: “Linger”.  What makes it familiar? It’s a cover of The Cranberries’ sole top 10 pop hit in the United States.  Taveira reintroduces the 1993 classic to a new audience in 2024.  While he is clothed in the str8_summer artwork (😏), when “Linger” was released as an advance single, he shows off his midriff 😮‍💨🫣🤭. Stare too long, and certain thoughts… um… linger

“But I’m in so deep

You know I’m such a fool for you

You got me wrapped around your finger

Do you have to let it linger?

Do you have to

Do you have to

Do you have to let it linger?”

COVERS [📷: Brent Faulkner /The Musical Hype; Alan Cordero from Pexels]As much fun as it is to acknowledge beauty when you see it, the music is the priority! Taveira has a lovely voice.  He delivers an enjoyable, well-rounded vocal on “Linger.” In his hands, “Linger” sounds more contemporary than the original preceding it by 31 years. Hubby, who produces, plays a pivotal role in crafting this oldie to fit Mike.  It’s more pop oriented. In the context of the EP, this song fits the sad vibes.  “I swore I would be true / And honey so did you,” Taveira sings, adding, “So why were you holding her hands? / Is that the way we stand? / Were you lying all the time? / Was it just a game to you?” Whoever said that love is easy lied! Even though his partner lets it linger, Mike’s pain, and his sweet vocals on this cover of “Linger” are our listening pleasure. It is a fitting closing cut from str8_summer.  Mike Taveira – you da man!
