Rhode Island rapper Mike Stud showcases a solid flow and delivers an enjoyable, though not transcendent effort on These Days.
Michael Seander â better known as Mike Stud is a rapper from Providence, Rhode Island. Rhode Island isnât exactly a “hot bed” for hip-hop, but hey, theyâve got Mike Stud, right? So how much of a stud is Stud in the rap game? Listening to These Days, Stud definitely has a solid flow, even if heâs not a game changer.
âSwishâ
Studâs confidence is clear from the start with â âSwish,â where the MC spits agilely over biting production. There are plenty of great one-liners, including âSigninâ deals without a label involved / The size of the checks, you would think that I was still playinâ some ball.â
â â10th Inningâ features incredibly slick production, so much so it arguably trumps the song itself. Even so, Stud delivers a memorable hook chocked full of swagger, much like the opener.
âMixed women, mixed drinks for them mixed feelings Big cribs with them big ceilings⌠Hit town, well thatâs big pimpinâ My potential, thatâs infinite Pen game insane, make hits like Ken Griffey in the 10th inning Fucked around and fell in love with it.â
âAfter Hoursâ
âAfter Hoursâ doesnât leave much to the imagination. Stud spits: âCouple drinks in me, couple texts to you / I swear to god this some type of shit I never doâŚâ He later clearly articulates his intentions: âCause Imma fuck you so good Iâm about to ruin your plans.â
Itâs predictable. Similarly âBlack Outâ doesnât separate itself from better song. At the same time, itâs not total miss â average at best. âSpell Checkâ seems to question the balance between staying true to oneself and embracing the party with the risk or thrill of excess. Itâs definitely an interesting listen, despite running under two minutes. The concluding lines are arguably Studâs best and most prudent: âNever edit for someone elseâs credit / That ainât the message Iâm sending.âÂ
âAnyone Elseâ
âAnyone Elseâ doesnât leave much to the imagination either, but not because of overconfidence. Basically âAnyone Elseâ is the setâs love song, with Stud paying ode to his love. The problem? Itâs not empty by any means, but itâs also not particularly memorable.
âYNK,â an acronym for âyou never know,â recaptures the spirit swag of the opening duo. The problem? Itâs just over a minute in length. But hey, we get ripe lyrics like, âLifeâs a bitch but I fuck with her / I just might fall in love with her.â Give Stud credit for âThrough the Nightâ with its moody, experimental vibe. Stud definitely sounds under the influence of Drake here.
âJack Danielsâ
In addition to the hypnotic guitar, â âJack Danielsâ as a whole is easily among the setâs top-three songs. Thereâs more cockiness: âGot my girl at the crib foreplaying / and Iâm cruising down the motherfucking Boulevard.â There’s also some vulnerability:
âThat Jack Daniels, wash away my sadness For the money and the fame and the antics Man, god damn it So pour me some Jack Daniels.â
No itâs not a potential Grammy-winning joint, but again, among the elites of These Days.Â
âThese Days (Remix)â featuring Marcus Stroman finds Mike Stud as self-assured â aka cocky â as ever. A perfect example: âI fucked three times before three today, piece of cake.â Thatâs not even the hook, where Studâs definitely âin the moodâ:
âI just wanna chill, drink, smoke, fuck Cause god damn, that bodyâs goals as fuck Somehow you hot as hell but still cold as fuck.â
This isnât new, itâs clichĂŠ, but if only temporarily, itâs accomplishes the task?
Final Thoughts
So, whatâs the verdict on These Days? Overall itâs an enjoyable effort, but itâs also not an album that brings anything particularly new or transcendent to rap. Listening to These Days, it feels like an album thatâs played out multiple times. That doesnât make it bad and definitely not inferior, but it also doesnât necessarily distinguish it or Mike Stud from other MCs.
