Miguel, "Funeral" [Photo Credit: RCA]Grammy-winning urban contemporary artist Miguel manages to transform a funeral into a sexed-up happening on his brief single, “Funeral.”

“Send my regards to the mother and father / ‘Cause somebody’s daughter I just fucking slayed…” Can you guess the keyword from those excerpts from the chorus of “Funeral” ⚰️? If you guessed the f-bomb that Grammy-winning R&B artist Miguel serves up, you would be correct.  Throughout his career, the urban contemporary standout has kept things quite sexual, from the likes of “Arch & Point” (Kaleidoscope Dream) to almost the entirety of his 2015 LP, WILDHEART.  “Funeral” kicks off the with aforementioned chorus, which continues, “Blood on the carpet, it came from my heart / Once I start, I can’t stop it, and now we all pray.”

Miguel keeps things quite short on “Funeral,” which clocks in at a modest two-minutes-and-fifteen seconds.  Still, that’s enough time for him to be freaky, focusing on her private parts and what he’s ‘doing’ with his own.  On the first verse, the sex is real, as he asserts, “And that pussy ain’t a rental,” later asking his victim lover, “Do you feel me in your mental? / I’m fucking drilling in your dental.”  He continues to ride the funeral wave on the second verse, referencing the coroner, and stating, “She was dead on arrival.” Wow.

Beyond the super sexed-up lyrics, the production of “Funeral” is notable. There are dark synths, heavily distorted vocals by Miguel, and expectedly, bass-heavy drum programming, sure to cause the trunk to rattle.  If nothing else, the song is a vibe.

Final Thoughts

If nothing else, Miguel is true to himself on “Funeral.” The sex is turned up, as is the distortion across the board.  There is a lack of substance – sex is rarely transcendent – but give the singer/songwriter credit for approaching the universal language metaphorically in an unexpected way.
