Grammy-nominated rap collective Migos (Offset, Quavo, and Takeoff) always seem to be good for a banger.  On Cinco De Mayo 2020, they unleashed “Taco Tuesday”, intact with a LeBron James sample.  Brief, “Taco Tuesday” was quite entertaining. The same can be said of the song at hand, “Racks 2 Skinny,” released days later on Monday, May 11.  “Racks 2 Skinny” doesn’t offer up anything ‘brand-new’ from the trio, but they definitely flex.

Migos owe part of the success of “Racks 2 Skinny” to its banging, trap production. Hey – can you have a banger without the banging production to match? Don’t think so! The trio have the talent behind the boards with DJ Durel, PVLACE, and Gunboi.  “Racks 2 Skinny” is set in a minor key, but the keyboards/synths are quite lovely, while the beat anchors things down, bringing toughness.

Of course, Migos bring plenty of toughness on their own.  Takeoff kicks things off with the drippy first verse: “These rainbow diamonds up in that Rollie / No, this not your regular timepiece (Rainbow).” Quavo segues on the second verse with the fire, particular the wordplay with guns:

“I walk in this bitch with my gun out
…She still count the bag and went on this bitch to clock out (Go)
I pulled the F&N out of my drawers
She thought I was pullin’ my cock out (Cock out)
If you touch one of us, we bust
Your lil’ bitty shit get shot down (Grrah).”

The chorus follows, with the majority handled by Quavo with the line, “When the racks too skinny,” being key.  Offset enters the picture for the third and final verse, rivaling his fellow Migos blending drip, confidence, and, did I already mention drip? “Cash in the vault, I got more than a million / M’s in the bank, I don’t care ‘bout opinions (M’s).”

Final Thoughts

All in all, Migos deliver on “Racks 2 Skinny.” Do they serve up clichés? Of course, they do, but at least they do so in entertaining fashion.  Furthermore, they’re backed by some sickness by the production team.  Lives won’t be altered by “Racks 2 Skinny” – Offset, Quavo, and Takeoff have already shown us the Culture – but it’s a worthwhile trap banger.
