Miesha & The Spanks, "Mixed Blood Girls" [📷: Miesha & The Spanks]Calgary, AB rock collective Miesha and the Spanks shine on the personal, dynamic, and expressive single, “Mixed Blood Girls.”

Gracing this platform for the first time is Canadian (Calgary, Alberta) collective 🎙 Miesha and the Spanks – give them the warmest of welcomes! This duo (🎙 Miesha Louie and 🎙 Sean Hamilton) definitely ‘bring the heat’ with rock encompassing punk, garage, and hard rock. You know what that means? They’re not afraid to get down, dirty, and flat-out noisy – ROCK ON! Of the single at hand, 🎵 “Mixed Blood Girls”, which appears on the collective’s 💿 Singles (EP) (April 16, 2021), Louie provides plenty of personal background.  Per Louie, “(Some of) my story as a mixed Secwépemc girl from the East Kootenays. My dark skin and white features left me open to compliments on my ‘beautiful tan,’ and when they found out it wasn’t, I was ‘too pretty to be an Indian.’ From ballet moms to dudes in bars, I’ve heard it all.”  The background doesn’t end there, but that alone gives you an idea of what “fuels the fire” behind the song.

“Mixed Blood Girls” commences abruptly and in your face – it certainly rocks hard 🤘! This is the type of record that lands a punch before you can even fully process what hits you.  That’s intentional on Miesha and the Spanks’ part.  Throughout the course of this hard-hitting joint, Miesha Louie serves up aggressive, unapologetic vocals, filled with emotion and expression.  It’s clear that she wants to audience to feel the “fucked up feeling” that she sings based on her own life experiences.  Those feelings about being a ‘mixed blood girl’ and the inappropriate, tone deaf comments made are superbly captured though the sharp riffs, punchy drums, and those personal lyrics, sung with incredible conviction by Miesha.  Also, the chromatic descending bass line is pretty rad that occurs during the titular lyric.

Final Thoughts 💭

If you need a hard rocking joint with meaningful writing behind it, then 🎵 “Mixed Blood Girls” is your cup or tea, or whatever your preferred drink is! Miesha and the Spanks definitely impress with the narrative, sound, and though often overused, the ‘vibe’ established.  Lots to like for sure!
