Michael Ray, Amos © Warner Music NashvilleFlorida country singer Michael Ray shines on “Get to You,” originally released in 2017, appearing on his sophomore album, ‘Amos.’

Michael Ray once told us that “Real Men Love Jesus.” Amen. He also previously asserted he’d “Kiss You in the Morning.” Sexy to the nth degree. See where we’re going with this? Those songs appeared on the heavily-tatted, Floridian country singer’s major-label debut, Michael Ray, released in 2015. He’s back with a brand-new album, Amos, which is due June 1, 2018.  The single at hand,“Get to You,” was released in 2017 ahead of “Fan Girl”.

“Somebody had to hurt you bad

For you to give up like that

Somebody had to break your heart in two

But that ain’t me and you.”

“Get to You” centers around opening yourself up to love. In this particular case, Ray is trying to get a woman who has been hurt to stop running away from love and embrace it.  Throughout the course of the song, he emphasizes that he isn’t like her past disappointments on this thoughtful, beautifully performed ballad.  The centerpiece is the chorus.

“Run away, run away from love

What the hell are you so scared of?

You walk away when you’ve had enough

Of trying, of trying

Girl there’s always gonna be some pain

A little sunshine, a little rain

It doesn’t mean it ain’t worth it babe

I’m trying, I’m trying to get to you.”

Final Thoughts

I wasn’t necessarily a fan girl – rather a ‘fan boy’ – for “Fan Girl,” the first single I heard from Amos. That said, “Get to You” is a better, thoughtful, and more meaningful record.  Once anyone has been hurt, sometimes, there’s a situation where they eschew romantic interests for fear of being hurt again. Michael Ray shows himself to be the ultimate gentleman – a suitor who wouldn’t dare break her heart or cause her the pain she’s experienced in the past.  Well performed, and thoughtfully written and produced.
