Michael Bublé ‘brings the heat’ on a gorgeous rendition of the traditional pop standard, “When I Fall in Love,” from his 10th album, ‘love.’
“When I fall in love / It will be forever / Or I’ll never fall in love.” Ah, that old traditional standard, “When I Fall in Love” has been covered by numerous artists. Even so, it never grows old. The same could be said of the interpretation in the hands of multi-Grammy winning traditional pop artist Michael Bublé. “When I fall in Love” serves as the promo single for his 10th studio album, love (November 16, 2018).
“When I Fall in Love” commences with a ‘lovely’, dramatic string introduction. As always, Bublé sings with a beautiful, rich vocal tone. Given the slow tempo, he takes his time singing, truly flaunting the sheer gorgeousness of his instrument. Nothing wrong with that. It takes north of a minute for the jazzy groove to kick in. Regardless, “When I Fall in Love” remains dominated by its lush strings. How ‘crucial’ are the strings? Well, while Michael is the star, enough can’t be said about how the strings accentuate the total performance. The sole quibble about this record is that the tempo is incredibly slow. Sure, it’s a ballad traditionally, but it wouldn’t have hurt having a couple more BPM. Going back to those strings – that dramatic ending is simply gorgeous.
Final Thoughts
All in all Michael Bublé (and his strings) come through on “When I Fall in Love.” It’s hard to make a classic sound original or truly captivating, but Bublé does a terrific job. Again, the only objection – the tempo is TOO slow, gorgeous pipes and strings or not.
