Michael Bublé, Nobody But Me © Reprise

3.5 out of 5 stars

Michael Bublé returns with infectious, “tongue-in-cheek” single, “Nobody but Me.” “Nobody but Me” serves as the title track for Bublé’s forthcoming album.

After a three-year hiatus between “studio” albums, Canadian vocal pop star Michael Bublé returns with Nobody but Me, due in October. Arriving ahead of the album is the set’s promo single, “Nobody but Me” – imagine that.  Does Bublé return with a bang? Yes.

“Nobody but Me” features a ‘tongue in cheek’ sound. This is perfectly suited for Bublé’s traditional pop/jazz style. Nice soul/pop cues – horns and ostinato piano namely – enhance the personality of the record. Clearly retro in sound, there’s a surprising swagger about it.

Vocally, Bublé delivers a solid performance. He’s still got a great set of pipes as he inches towards the 20-year mark. He receives sound support, thanks to the background shouts on the chorus. The rap verse (Black Thought) is surprising, but a perfect fit. Call the rap an update on Bublé’s sound.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, while “Nobody but Me” is tongue ‘n’ cheek, it’s irresistibly fun.  The rap verse should amplify the corniness, but works as an update to Bublé’s classy, throwback sound. Bublé sounds as strong as always. Quite enjoyable, “Nobody but Me” gets stuck in the head easily.
