MGMT, Little Dark Age © ColumbiaMGMT, comprised of Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, returns with a thrilling new single, “Little Dark Age,” following a 4-year hiatus.

MGMT is back! The last time we heard from the trippy alternative duo was in 2013 when they dropped their self-titled, third studio album.  A fine effort, MGMT didn’t receive the same attention as the band’s debut, Oracular Spectacular (2007), or sophomore LP, Congratulations (2010).  But the past is the past. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser drop a hot new single, “Little Dark Age,” ahead of their forthcoming studio album, which is expected to arrive in 2018.

“Little Dark Ages” initiates with alluring, mysterious synths.  These synths serve as the pre-cursor to a sick, infectious, alt-pop groove.  The production, arguably, is the best feature of the record.  BUT, even the backdrop has legit competition. Vocally, VanWyngarden quickly proves he hasn’t missed a beat – he sounds as tuned-in as ever. Throughout “Little Dark Ages,” he compellingly delivers the ‘frightening,’ poetic lyrics.  Adding to his effectiveness is the vocal production – that signature MGMT sound fans have come to know and love.  Additionally, VanWyngarden sounds a hair more assertive.  He doesn’t push, but there’s more edge, which suits the lyrical content and theme.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, it’s a treat to have MGMT back, after they seemed to disappear off the face of the earth.  “Little Dark Age” is a fine track – well-rounded and creative through and through. Perhaps characterizing it as catchy is an overstatement, but there is an infectiousness, even with the constant lyrical contrasts.  The five-minute duration pushes things, but it’s definitely a worthwhile five-minutes by all means.
