Grammy-winning pop artist Meghan Trainor returns with “Can’t Dancer,” her second single released in 2018 following “No Excuses” and “Let You Be Right.”
“Woo!” First things first. It should be noted that pop singer Meghan Trainor is a Grammy-winner. That’s quite a prestigious honor. That said, artistically, Trainor has her fair share of skeptics. Critics were quick to criticize here 2016 album, Thank You, specifically singles “No!” and “Me Too.” Despite the criticism and lack of awards success with album number two, Trainor seems to be building up to her third album, with singles “No Excuses”,“Let You Be Right”, and “Can’t Dance.”
Expectedly, the lyrics of “Can’t Dance” are silly. On the first verse, an outgoing Meghan Trainor is turned on by “this shy boy, cute as hell” who admits, “‘Oh, I can’t dance.’” Geez Louise. Ultimately, Meghan could care less – he’s hot, and as long as he “just keep(s) in time” and “don’t stop,” she’s rolling with him. On the second verse, she embraces her role as teaching her shy boy a thing or two, summed up best on the chorus.
“Even if you can’t dance, just hold my hips
Hold my hands while I roll my hips
Even if you can’t dance, I’ll handle it
Follow me and don’t stop
Even if you can’t dance, don’t stand and watch
Stand and watch while I make it hot
Even if you can’t dance, I’ma make it hot
Follow me and don’t stop.”
Final Thoughts
Expectedly, Meghan Trainor keeps it tongue-n-cheek to the nth degree. Perhaps the danceable “Can’t Dance” is corny and ultimately silly, it’s inoffensive. Even with a dash of innuendo, Trainor doesn’t cross any lines, which isn’t the case with many of her more sexually-charged contemporaries. “Can’t Dance” is groovy, throwback, well-produced, and again, inoffensive dance.
