Megan Thee Stallion & Normani join forces on “Diamonds,” the promo single from Birds of Prey: The Album, the soundtrack to the DC film.
So many comic and superhero films are male dominated – understatement. Birds of Prey definitely flips the script, and does so unapologetically. A female-centric movie deserves a fitting soundtrack, one that’s also dominated by females, right? Right. Megan Thee Stallion and Normani provide ‘just what the doctor ordered’ on the advance single, “Diamonds,” which appears as the third track off of Birds of Prey: The Album (February 7, 2020).
“Diamonds” is filled with mad energy and attitude. Louis Bell and MD$ provide the ladies with a sick backdrop – in a minor key, hard-nosed, and tough. The beat anchors things down, while the synths are ripe, particularly the low, brassy one. Following the instrumental intro, Normani commences “Diamonds,” with the chanted, non-melodic chorus.
“Diamonds are a girl’s best friend Di-diamonds are a girl’s best friend Southern girl like me, I ain’t afraid to catch a case VV’s on me and I flooded out the face.”
It’s no surprise that VV’s come into play – that’s very much part of urban culture. Normani doesn’t merely handle chorus duties. There’s the pre-chorus that naturally precedes, where her confidence is through the roof: “I love me this much / My pear shape all dripped up…” Again, what more can you say but, holy shit! On the bridge, “diamonds dancing” and there are “Bands on [her] hands.”
Megan Thee Stallion follows up with surefire toughness over the course of two verses. True to the script, she asserts at the beginning of the first verse, “I’m a super she-ro, bitch, don’t try me, ho / Bad like a villain, I pop it and then I reload.” Holy shit! On the second verse, she also keeps it 100 as she spits, “Come through with my girls, then beat your ass on ladies’ night.” An ass beating on ladies’ night – wow.
Final Thoughts
Soundtracks tend to be a mixed bag, whether original or compiled from previously released material. We won’t have a pulse on Birds of Prey: The Album overall until it’s released. That said, Megan Thee Stallion and Normani get off to a decent start with “Diamonds.” Will it change your life? Not a chance in hell, but, it’s an energetic and feisty cut that has its fair share of moments if nothing else.
