Philly rapper Meek Mill drops his first single, post-incarceration, with “Stay Woke.” On the honest, socially-conscious single, he’s assisted by Miguel.
“How I keep from goin’ under? / It’s like a jungle outside / Sometimes I wonder how I keep from goin’ under.” On Monday, June 25, 2008, Meek Miller released his first new single since 2017. “Stay Woke” arrives post-incarceration for the Philly rapper – that of course is a separate story. For his comeback, he taps Grammy-winning R&B singer Miguel. Just how ‘woke’ is Meek?
In regards to his flow, Meek Mill remains one of the more intriguing rappers in the game. On “Stay Woke,” he retains his distinct tone of voice, as well as his overall agility. Adding to the flow are honest, personal, and socially-conscious rhymes. Clearly, Meek has a stronger message than we’re accustomed to hearing, particularly when compared to some of his bangers and emptier records in the past (“Check” comes to mine). To his credit, “Young Black America” (Wins & Losses, 2017) showed more depth and meaningful rapping was in his arsenal. He focuses on black issues (racism and police brutality), his own legal issues as well as the new generation of rappers, and ‘coming up’. As for Miguel, he remains soulful on the chorus, but Meek is the main attraction.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Stay Woke” is a respectable, well-rounded single by Meek Mill. It’s well-produced, and Meek uses his rap skills effectively. Miguel supports successfully without overshadowing. Overall, it’s a meaningful, strong performance.
