Meek Mill, Championships [Photo Credit: Atlantic]Ahead of his highly-anticipated ‘Championships’ album, Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill dropped an honest, personal single, “Oodles O’ Noodles Babies.”

After whetting fans’ palates with his four-track EP, Legends of Summer, Meek Mill has a new album on the horizon, entitled Championships.  When is the Philly rapper schedule to hang up the banners? Sooner than later – Friday, November 30.  If his single “Oodles O’ Noodles Babies” is any indication, Championships should be a great showing for Meek.

Meek Mill, Legends of Summer (EP) | Album Review

Meek Mill starts things off with an honest, personal, spoken word intro:

“This shit right here for my Oodles o’ Noodles babies

His ma’ smoked the crack while she was pregnant so he can’t even help that he crazy

He goin’ to jail, it’s inevitable, for real.”

This intro foreshadows the ‘real talk’ that Meek Mill offers throughout the course of the record.  His flow is agile on both verses, particularly the fiery first verse where he focuses on the lack of belief and lack of hope bestowed upon him, as well as his lot in life.

“I used to act up when I went to school

Thought it was cool, but I really was hurt

Wanted my family to come to my games

My mama couldn’t make it ‘cause she was at work

Lived with my grandma, she took me to church…

Got a black judge tryna tear me down

All this jail time probably wear me down.”

Between the two verses, there’s an interlude as opposed to a chorus. The interlude is written similarly to the introduction.  Beyond the interlude, Meek ends the record with an outro, once more patterned after the intro and interlude sections.  Besides the personal nature of the lyrics, the soulful production work is worth mentioning, helping to fuel Meek’s honesty and openness.

Final Thoughts

What makes “Oodles ‘O Noodles Babies” stand out most is the fact that Meek Mill shows growth artistically.  Yes, he’s always rapped fast, but the level of personal authenticity has been kicked up a couple of notches.  As much as we’ve enjoyed Meek dropping bangers about money, it’s more rewarding to hear him drop bars about his life and emotions.
