So, without further ado, in the 56th edition of Beaming with Pride 🏳️🌈 (2024), we highlight “I Wish This Pillow Was You” performed by Matthew Orgel.
“Shitty morning, feeling broken / Wanna call you ‘cause I’m not one for healthy coping.” It’s sounding like a total bummer, Matthew Orgel. Matters of the heart fuel his ‘shitty morning’ on “I Wish This Pillow Was You”. The opening lines preface how relatable this pop song is. Whether you’re gay, straight, bi, or otherwise, the feelings that Orgel expresses speak volumes. But, you know what’s not shitty? Orgel’s musicianship! A 2022 graduate of the Berklee College of Music, he has a stellar voice, including a ripe, youthful falsetto, awesome songwriting chops (his degree), and is a multi-instrumentalist including playing the best instrument of them all, the piano (I’m biased, admittedly)! He penned “I Wish This Pillow Was You” alongside Camila Solis. He also produced this fine, honest number.
The young musician shines from the opening to the closing tip of “I Wish This Pillow Was You.” When it comes to this man, he admittedly can’t help himself, and that’s not good. “Got no self-control, someone take my phone / Before I text you and you’re taking off my clothes,” he sings, continuing, “‘Cause every time you end up back in my bed / It takes a week for me to clear up my head.” Oh, snap! So, what’s the problem with this ‘relationship’? It’s not a relationship. It’s giving FWB, and Orgel acknowledges he’s nothing more than fun for this guy he can’t get enough of. He wants their fun to be more but knows it won’t happen. Still, “But damn, you’re just my type / And I wish this pillow was you.” Self-destructive, Matt suffers from sheets that smell like this hottie he’ll never attain, and being left on read, yet, still wants him badly. As they say, the definition of insanity “is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Is Matthew Orgel insane? Probably not, but, ‘like’ and love will make you do crazy things, hence why he’s willing to subject himself to less than he deserves. “I Wish This Pillow Was You” is not only a sweet addition to the growing collection of gay bops but also a cautionary tale regarding unrequited love. Sex and love are not the same thing. Even if it feels good physically, emotionally, it can be damaging and detrimental.
