Singer/songwriter Matt Jaffe impresses once again with “Voodoo Doll,” an unorthodox love song of sorts sure to tickle your fancy.
“She has got my voodoo doll, she’ll hit it with a cannonball / It’s the only way she knows at all to say she loves me.” Wow, 🎙 Matt Jaffe, wow! That’s definitely ‘some kind of love’ to say the least. According to the gifted pop singer/songwriter, 🎵 “Voodoo Doll” is “the kind [of love song] you don’t want written about you.” That definitely seems to be the case, listening to and analyzing it lyrically. Even so, Jaffe continues to intrigue with his musicianship and his undisputed creativity.
The biggest selling point of “Voodoo Doll” is undoubtedly the songwriting, where the lyrics are concerned. Jaffee has a brilliant, relatable theme to work with, and he illustrates it like a champ. The plight of love is something else, and Matt poetically captures that sentiment (“My logic fails, her ardor falls, pain prevails within four walls”). Sigh, why couldn’t I have penned those words? Besides the lyricism, the performance and music itself is awesome. Jaffe’s vocals are gorgeous, clear, and commanding. He delivers a balanced, expressive performance through and through. He’s accompanied by guitar, though more notable are the lush, warm strings, which add a nice emotional touch. Getting slightly geekier, the bridge provides sensational contrast with its harmonic progression, and delivering a modulation into the final verse. In an age where key changes are rarer, Jaffe resurrects it – AWESOME!
