“I believe in G-O-D (Ayy) / Don’t believe in T-H-O-T.” Woo! Noted, Masked Wolf (Harry Michael).  The Australian rapper experienced a taste of success once. That one time was his one hit wonder, “Astronaut In The Ocean”, which was big worldwide. Focusing on the success stateside, “Astronaut” peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100.  It was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on October 26, 2021.  Those are some badass accolades for a 2:12 song. The brief cut is the 17^th and final track on the rapper’s 2021 album, Astronomical.  Masked Wolf penned “Astronaut In The Ocean” with producer Tyron Hapi.

The charm of “Astronaut In The Ocean” is its simplicity.  It’s a crowd-pleasing, relatively inoffensive rap banger. The backdrop isn’t ornate or overwrought, standing tall with his trap-oriented sound.  The opening bass line is striking, while the beat slaps. Masked Wolf delivers a compelling cadence and flow throughout the song.  He is on his melodic rap shit during the chorus, the section to beat.

“What you know about rollin’ down in the deep?

When your brain goes numb, you can call that mental freeze

When these people talk too much, put that shit in slow motion, yeah

I feel like an astronaut in the ocean, ayy.”

In the verses, he is confident in his unpitched rhymes. “Energy up, you can feel my surge / I’ma kill everything like this purge,” he raps in the first verse. Oh, snap! At the end of the second verse, he spits, “My rhyme’s inclined to break your spine (Spine) / They say that I’m so fine (Fine) / You could never match my grind (True) / Please do not, not waste my time (Wolf).” Ooh-wee, Masked! All in all, “Astronaut In The Ocean” is a fun, one-hit wonder by Masked Wolf.  He hasn’t struck gold again, but if he never does, this song cements his spot in music history.
