The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 76th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2024), we recollect and reflect on โ€œI Want Youโ€ performed by Marvin Gaye

Marvin Gaye, I Want You [๐Ÿ“ท: Motown]โ€œI want you (And I want you), the right way / I want you / But I want you to want me too.โ€ โ€œI Want Youโ€ is the opener on the album, I Want You, released in 1976.  This buttery smooth, ultra-soulful Marvin Gaye gem was written and produced by Arthur โ€œT-Boyโ€ Ross and Leon Ware. A success on the pop charts, it reached no. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  โ€œI Want Youโ€ has been covered and sampled many times.  You canโ€™t blame the artists for copping it โ€“ the source material is lit!

โ€œI Want Youโ€ features an infectious groove from the onset. Marvin Gayeโ€™s songs tend to thrive on groove and โ€œI Want Youโ€ is among the best. Set in a minor key, this exuberant soul cut has a dark side โ€“ or, at least, darker tonality. Contributing to its brilliance is radiant orchestration with soaring strings and articulated brass.  The prolonged instrumental introduction is a vibe, slowly but surely establishing โ€œI Want You.โ€ The chorus, the first section of the song with lyrics, is one of the biggest selling points.  Itโ€™s tuneful melodically and memorable lyrically.  The verses are light on lyrics but contribute to the aesthetic โ€“ the vibe. โ€œOoh, itโ€™s too bad, itโ€™s just too sad, you donโ€™t want me now,โ€ Gaye sings in the first verse, concluding, โ€œBut Iโ€™m going to change your mind, someway, somehow, oh baby.โ€ Indeed! At the end of the second, he sings, โ€œDonโ€™tโ€™ play with something you should cherish for life, oh baby / Donโ€™t you want to care? Ainโ€™t it lonely out there?โ€ Word.  Of course, the biggest reason โ€œI Want Youโ€ is a spectacular song is because of Gaye.  He sounds utterly sensational from a vocal perspective.  Heโ€™s super smooth and firmly invested, easily selling this love-longing gem.
