Martin Garrix, Dreamer [Photo Credit: Epic Amsterdam]Martin Garrix continues his ascent in the dance game with his bright, inspirational, and uplifting gem, “Dreamer,” featuring R&B singer Mike Yung.

Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix continues to deliver captivating music, period.  2018 alone has saw a number of truly alluring numbers – vocal and instrumental collaborations – that have been memorable and special.  His latest collaboration, “Dreamer,” with American R&B singer/ America’s Got Talent contestant Mike Yung (who’s nearly three times Garrix’s age), is as special as all the rest.

“Dreamer” commences with enigmatic, warm synths at the onset. Naturally, the intro foreshadows the ‘sunniness’ that is to come. Mike Yung impresses with his unique vocals, which are mellow (initially), and consistently soulful.  Additionally, his performance as a whole can be described as inspirational and uplifting. Keying in on the verses, on verse one, Yung sings, “I’m a dreamer / Don’t tell me not to dream / I got freedom / And that’s everything to me…”  Verse two contains a similar sentiment: “I’m a lover / Don’t tell me who to love / I’m a runner / ‘Cause I’ve got somewhere to run…” Yung’s at his best when his vocals soar high towards and on the chorus.

With so much made about Yung, what about Martin Garrix? As always, Garrix does a terrific job complementing his featured guest.  In this case, it’s the synths and the overall backdrop that he chooses, particularly on the high-flying chorus.  Lyrically, the chorus isn’t deep, yet the repeated line is definitely transcendent in its own right: “As long as I got something to believe in.”

Final Thoughts

Can Martin Garrix do any wrong? It doesn’t seem like it.  Certainly, “Dreamer” is another well-crafted collaboration that continues to find Garrix flexing like the boss he is.  Pairing with Mike Yung is totally left of center, but sometimes, the collaborations that you don’t expect are the most worthwhile. “Dreamer” is a perfect example of this.
