“Nobody’s Love,” the first new single by Maroon 5 in 2020 is pleasant and sleekly produced but feels formulaic and a hair too safe.
The sound of Maroon 5 in 2020 is a far cry from the sound of the band back in the early aughts – 💯. That’s to be expected, of course, given how different pop/rock music sounds currently. That said, Adam Levine and company are one of those acts that I personally wished they’d retained some of their classic sound. But alas, I suppose I can just stream “This Love” over and over at this point. M5 have been successful, even with their ‘evolution,’ but, sometimes it seems they’ve sacrificed some artistry, one of my issues with albums Overexposed and Red Pill Blues. Rant over, Levine and they boys are back with their first new single of 2020, “Nobody’s Love.”
“Nobody’s Love” is pretty much your standard modern pop cut through and through. Check out the credits, and you’ll notice there are 10 songwriters… The writing is respectable mind you, but it’s not so masterful listening to it that it sounds like it took that many ‘cooks in the kitchen.’ From a production standpoint, “Nobody’s Love” is sleekly produced (The Monsters & Strangerz, German, Ryan OG, and B Ham), still, it’s not so ornate that I say to myself, his requires multiple producers, but I digress. The backdrop is pleasant and quite beautiful, which is arguably the biggest selling point of the song. As for Adam Levine, he sings well, but like everything else about “Nobody’s Love,” I don’t leave wowed with my fancy particularly tickled.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Maroon 5 returns with a pleasant, respectable single in “Nobody’s Love.” Even though I enjoy the sound of the record, I do find myself wanting a bit more oomph. That’s the thing with M5 – sometimes I’d just like to hear more punch and perhaps, more spontaneity. “Nobody’s Love” is successful but, it’s also formulaic.
