Bring on the outlandishness!
Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 provides background information and insight into rock and metal songs that raise eyebrows and stir the pot. The records featured on Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 can be classic or brand new. In the 9th edition of Outlandish Rock 🎸🤘 (2022), we explore 🎵 “Cake and Sodomy” performed by 🎙 Marilyn Manson.Theme & Lyrics ✍
“White trash, get down on your knees / Time for cake and sodomy.” Oh dear! 🎙 Marilyn Manson has always been, um, risqué and unapologetic. On the 💿 Portrait of an American Family (1994) standout, 🎵 “Cake and Sodomy”, the front man and the rest of the band are true to their shocking script. The music is meant to incite and incite “Cake and Sodomy” does. As stated when analyzing the controversial 🎙 Rammstein song, 🎵 “Bück dich”, sodomy lends itself to controversy. The same case can be made here that before Manson proclaims himself to be “the god of fuck,” the word sodomy in the title solidified the controversy and shock value.
That said, Manson is loud and proud about being “the god of fuck,” and there is no short of fuckery to be found on “Cake and Sodomy” (see what I did there). The first verse sets the tone, with Manson asserting, “Virgins sold in quantity, herded by heredity / Red-neck-burn-out-mid-west-mind / ‘Who said date rape isn’t kind?’/ Porno-nation, evaluation.” Wow! One of the best lines appears at the end of the first verse in this energetic, eyebrow-raising joint: “Too much oral defecation.” Oh, that talking shit! The first verse is rad, but the second is insane! Manson manages to masterfully combine corrupt religion and sex together. “Cash in hand and dick on screen / Who said God was ever clean?” he asserts, continuing, “Bible-belt ‘round anglo-waste / Putting sinners in their place / Yeah right, great, if you’re so good / Explain the shit stains on your face.” WTF? The wordplay is brilliant. Say what you will about Marilyn Manson, but his lyrics are always poetic (even darkly so) and thought provoking.
Final Thoughts 💭
Marilyn Manson is rightfully controversial. Add in the allegations made against him, and he’s even worse. That said, his art, albeit crude and outlandish, is intriguing. I’m not sure why rock musicians have been utterly fascinated by sodomy references – especially metal – but whatever. I wouldn’t play 🎵 “Cake and Sodomy” just anywhere, of course. Even in 2022, when this is originally being published, it’s outlandish, man!
