After a seven-year hiatus, Mariah Carey returns with a confident, entertaining, and well-rounded comeback single, “Type Dangerous.”
“Oh, yes, I want someone to step to me / Oh, yes, I want someone to rescue me / Oh, yes, I’ve never been afraid of love (Dangerous) / Oh, yes, that’s why I like ‘em dangerous.” Word. Although she begins thawing out around November, ushering in ace-in-the-hole “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, Mariah Carey, who is 56 years young, is so much more than her beloved, often overplayed original Christmas song. But, the last time Carey released original pop and R&B music was 2018 (Caution) … It is now 2025. That is an extended hiatus. Thankfully, Carey decided to return in the summer months of 2025 with her first brand-new single in seven years, “Type Dangerous”. The single will appear on her first new album in seven years, too. Like many popular songs, “Type Dangerous” has lots of cooks in the songwriting kitchen, including Carey herself. Notably, the song samples the 1987 Eric B. & Rakim classic, “Eric B. Is President”. Carey, Daniel Moore II, and N.W.I. produced the sub-three-minute comeback single. Notably, the song arrives via the independent record label and music publisher, gamma..
“Type Dangerous” features a sickening groove including clapping (“Ma-ma-make ‘em clap to this”), a bass-heavy beat, and hard-hitting drums. Backed by a sound instrumental, Mariah Carey commands from the beginning. She convincingly sings the rhythmic melody with attitude (“I don’t have time for the rigamarole / Taking off my coat, clearing my throat”), confidence (“I came to the door, dripped in Balenci’ / Cropped leather coat and some nine-inch Fendis,” and “Certified diamonds like the songs I wrote”), and, of course, clear, seasoned vocals. There are no shortage of intriguing lyrics, which require multiple listens to capture everything Mimi says. Like the first verse (excerpted above), the second is jam-packed with ish. “Fresh outta Sing Sing, nah, I’m just playin’ / That was just a castle and an evil king,” she shades ex-hubby Tommy Mottola while also referencing the correctional facility. There’s more ear-catching moments including “Computer boy toy, he was fun for a while / ‘Til I caught him on the web hacking other girls’ files,” and, “Said we’d be together, but you didn’t stay forever / Now I guess it’s just whatever ‘til the twelfth of never.” So, where does this dangerousness reach a head? The chorus, where Carey sings coolly but highly effectively.
“I’m lookin’ for the dangerous type (Lookin’ for that danger)
I like ‘em dangerous (I like ‘em dangerous)
That’s my type
I’m lookin’ for the dangerous type
I said I like ‘em dangerous.”
With the compelling “Type Dangerous”, Mariah Carey is officially B-A-C-K, back! This is not the crowning achievement of her illustrious career – she’s recorded more dynamic and memorable songs – but it is always great to hear Mimi doing what she does best, singing!
