Mariah Carey, Caution [Photo Credit: Epic]Mariah Carey continues her ‘comeback tour’ with “A No No,” the fourth advance single from her highly-anticipated 15th studio album, ‘Caution.’

“I ain’t even mad, no, not like befo’ / Off with your head, now slither out the door.” Da-yum! No need to proceed with Caution, as Mariah Carey seems to be all-the-way ‘back.’ Following a four-year hiatus and an under-appreciated LP (Me. I Am Mariah…The Elusive Chanteuse), the Grammy-winning, R&B icon seems to be on an upward trajectory once again.  Carey has been in this territory before – can you say The Emancipation of Mimi? Ahead of Caution (November 16, 2018), she continues to drop singles, with the latest being the song at hand, “A No No.”

“You shoulda know that it’s bigger than you

You’ll never know what I already knew

After everything I already been through

I can’t waste no time, pay no ‘tention to you.”

Like preceding advance singles from Caution, Mariah Carey stays true to R&B.  While “A No No” doesn’t allow her to flex vocally like her ballads do, she’s on-point with the rhythmic melodic line and bringing a feistiness to the performance.  Produced by Shea Taylor, As contemporary as “A No No” is, it also sounds like a throwback to her glory days.  The modern piece of “A No No” is definitely the swagger that she brings making it clear that her age is by no means a hindrance.  In regards to form, things are pretty straightforward – verses, choruses, and a bridge, notably performed by Notorious B.I.G., who is sampled here.

Final Thoughts

All in all, Mariah Carey continues a strong promotional campaign with “A No No.” No, the record isn’t ‘the second coming’ or the best promo single from Caution, but it checks off all the boxes: vocals, production, and songwriting (for the most part). Hopefully, Carey is able to regain some of her lost momentum, which has been down throughout the 2010s.
