Just months removed from his debut album ‘Gossip Columns,’ urban-pop artist Marc E. Bassy returns with a brand-new single, “Main Chick.”
“I was on the sidelines, I didn’t wanna try / You the only one that made me want a better life.” On “Main Chick,” urban-pop artist Marc E. Bassy pays ode to his “main chick,” plain and simple. “Main Chick” has its fair share of selling points. The production work is among them, exhibiting the utmost sleekness with a variety of sounds including keyboards, guitars, synths, and an anchoring, hard-hitting beat. Stylistically, the sound embodies urban contemporary music more so than pop, even if the lines are incredibly blurred these days. In regards to Bassy, stylistic labels are a non-factor – he’s equally at home in pop, urban, and hip-hop artistically. Need the proof – Gossip Columns.
Focusing on the star, Marc E. Bassy sings with a lot of swag – he definitely exhibits ‘mad game.’ Among the best moments are the rhythmic, quick-paced melodic lines of the verses. These are undoubtedly the influence and product of hip-hop. As great as he is on the verses, it’s the catchy hook, arriving at the top of the record, that serves as the centerpiece. Is it deep? Absolutely not, but key to the song’s success to say the least.
“That my main chick, that my main bitch
Got a couple on the side that I hang with…
But you the one, baby, you the one
Only one that know where I’m coming from.”
Final Thoughts
While the glorification of bitch is a problem (bigger than this particular record), Marc E. Bassy continues to build a compelling case for himself. Gossip Columns didn’t get it’s just due in 2017 – this dude has legit talent. No, he doesn’t reinvent the wheel on “Main Chick” – the idea of a “main chick” is cliché to the nth degree – but all in all, he plays the cliché up successfully. That’s worth something.
