Rising, Grammy-nominated Australian alt, electro-pop collective Mansionair shines on “Technicolour,” their second single of 2018.
My first encounter as a listener with Australian trio Mansionair came by way of Seattle electronic duo ODESZA. They were featured guests on the Grammy-nominated dance recording, “Line of Sight”, my personal favorite record from ODESZA’s Grammy-nominated LP A Moment Apart. Mansionair is an alternative, electro-pop collective, composed of Lachlan Bostock, Alex Nicholls, and Jack Froggatt. Up to this point, in addition to releasing singles, the band has only released EPs: Pick Me Up (2015) and Hold Me Down (2016). The superb “Technicolour” marks their second single of 2018, following “Violet City.”
“Technicolour” impresses from start to finish. The rhythmic, ultra-percussive drums at the top set a tone of excellence for the record as a whole. The verses are characterized by smoky, smooth vocals – the tone is simply beautiful. On the chorus, the vocals pack more oomph and punch. These more powerful and high-flying pipes match the simplistic, yet effective and memorable chorus.
“We were in love / We were in love / Oh, we were in love / we were in love / An all we need is technicolor.”
Going back the production, beyond the drums, the instrumental palette is pretty sweet. Mansionair blesses us with guitars, strings, and keyboards/synths. All of these instruments are well blended to create a truly decadent backdrop.
Final Thoughts
Mansionair are among many newbies in the music game, but hopefully they breakthrough big time. “Technicolour” is a well-done record in every facet. The vocals are solid, the production scrumptious, and the songwriting is respectable. Lachlan, Alex, and Jack have plenty to offer, and the world needs to see and hear it.
