3.5 out of 5 stars

Mali Music, The Transition of Mali © RCAMali Music and Jazmine Sullivan portray the power and sanctity of love on the fifth single from ‘The Transition of Mali,’ “Loved by You.”

Once upon a time, Mali Music was a gospel artist.  Prior to his 2014 R&B album, Mali Is…, Mali Music was known more for his spiritually-driven endeavors.  Nonetheless, Mali Is, as well as his 2017 effort, The Transition of Mali, both have their fair share of spiritual messaging.  Five singles arrived ahead of The Transition of Mali, including “Loved by You,” featuring Jazmine Sullivan.  “Loved by You” was the final single issued ahead of the album.

The record opens with strings, giving off a throwback, soulful sound. Further adding to the vintage quality is the meter. “Loved by You” is a slow-jam, set in 6/8. There’s a laziness about the song; it never rushes, thriving at its deliberate pace. Expectedly, overall, the production work is brilliant, anchored by a robust bass line.

Given the artistic sensibilities of Mali Music, this is a match made in heaven.  It works out well for Jazmine Sullivan as well.  In addition to awesome singing, Mali Music incorporates some spoken word – think more poet than rapper. As for Sullivan, she thrives in her lower register, flexing her incredibly underrated contralto pipes.  Ultimately, “Loved by You” is truly about love – it’s chivalrous and feels authentic.

Final Thoughts

All in all, the fifth and final pre-release single from The Transition of Mali is a winner.  With five of the twelve songs from the album issued and reviewed, it seems unlikely that Mali Music has anything other than a gem on his hands.  “Loved by You” continues the artist’s pursuit to bless listeners with meaningful, transcendent music.
