Toronto duo Majid Jordan returns with “My Imagination,” a single from their sophomore album, The Space Between.
It’s OVO (October’s Very Own) season – didn’t you know? Majid Jordan, comprised of Majid Al Maskati and Jordan Ullman, are back with their sophomore album, The Space Between. Ahead of the album, they drop singles “One I Want,” “Phases,” and “My Imagination.” “My Imagination” enlists fellow OVO signees, dvsn.
“My Imagination” opens with moody and mysterious production work. This is clearly representative the Canadian R&B vibe, a big player in the alternative R&B movement. After about 30 seconds of nebulousness, the beat kicks in, and “My Imagination” becomes clearer. The vocals by Majid Al Maskati are clear and commanding, painting over the enigmatic backdrop beautifully. The lyrics keep things simple, but effective and fitting.
“My imagination, yeah My imagination is taking me places It’s a celebration but I been here mistaking someone for you...”
After singing the first verse, Majid goes on to unveil the chorus.
“You remind me of a pretty girl, baby You remind me of a pretty girl, you do You remind me of a pretty girl, baby, who broke, who broke my heart, baby That tore my heart.”
After a verse and a chorus, Majid hands the mic over to dvsn, specifically, Daniel Daley. Expectedly, the results are top-notch. The two combine forces on the chorus that follows, before Majid closes out things. All in all, there’s lots to like about this performance.
Final Thoughts
With many of the OVO Sound artists, vibe is everything. That’s exactly what “My Imagination” gives off – excellent vibes. As a song, Majid Jordan and dvsn aren’t offering up a valedictory effort, but the vibes atone. The vocals and production are excellent, even if the songwriting is so-so.
