On the 21st edition of Controversial Tunes, we explore the controversy behind the song, “Lolli” by Maejor (formerly Maejor Ali).

Sometimes, timing can incite controversy itself. That’s the case with the 2013
Maejor (formerly Maejor Ali) song,
“Lolly.” Obviously, this record isn’t about the sweet lollipop
enjoyed by everybody and his/her brother/sister. “She say she love my lolly / She wanna make it pop,” Maejor sings/pop raps on the chorus. Clearly, the ‘lolly’ is his penis
, and there’s a reason she wants to “make it POP”
. Do you need further evidence of the reference to oral sex? He continues, “She wanna kiss the top.” Yikes! Really, “Lolly” could’ve been featured on After Dark
. The thing is songs referencing oral have grown common. It was more controversial in 2013, but the appearance of
Justin Bieber on this naughty track is the real reason it’s considered controversial.
Bieber jumping onto an oral sex-promoting rap record wasn’t his best move in 2013. Sure, he was 19 – not the child he was when entering the game – but he’d yet to ease his audience, which skews younger, into more mature territory. His previous album, 2012’s
Believe, was still firmly planted in teen pop. Even bigger than that, however, is the fact Bieber was in a bad phase of his life. To the public eye, he was rebellious, self-destructive, and getting into trouble – an arrogant, spoiled brat. In a time where more mature individuals would seek to rehabilitate image and opt for something more wholesome, Bieber was that ‘bad boy’ who dropped a verse on this shallow joint alongside Maejor and perhaps more troubling
Juicy J (“Bands a make her dance, molly make her lose them underwear / Booty cheeks I’m geek’d all her friends are freaks”).
Final Thoughts
Was the controversy behind “Lolly” back then too much? Perhaps, but Justin Bieber was ‘too much’ back then himself – he’d probably admit that. Today, like many contemporaries, he swears, including a few f-bombs. That said, he’s tamer than many colleagues, almost seeking to atone for his poor choices in the past. Worth noting, he played no role in the “lollipop licking,” but found himself guilty, or should I say controversial, by association. He does reference Netflix though – “Got your girlfriend at my crib watching Netflix.” Call this one a ‘tame’ controversy, I guess.
