Madonna taps Maluma for a surprising Latin-pop single, “Medellín,” which serves as the promo single from her 14th studio album, ‘Madame X’ (June 14, 2019).
“One, two, one, two / One, two, cha-cha-cha / One, two, two, one / Two, one, cha, cha-cha-cha.” Madonna is back! That’s right, the iconic pop singer that needs no introduction has a new album on the horizon, Madame X, arriving June 14, 2019. Madame X marks the 14th studio album by the chanteuse. The thing about Madonna is, you never know exactly what she’s going to do or what direction she’s going to go. That’s the case with the promo single for Madame X, “Medellín” which finds her collaborating with reggaetón superstar, Maluma.
Not only does “Medellín” serve as the promo single for Madame X, it also commences the album. As the introductory statement for the album, “Medellín” is energetic, groovy, and sleekly produced. As is expected from any Madonna song, the backdrop needs to be on-point. “Medellín” checks off those boxes. Another box that “Medellín” checks off is that of going against the grain. Honestly, did anyone expect for Madonna to deliver a Latin-pop cut as her promo single or album opener? That’s a resounding ‘hell no’ if I ever heard one. So, while calling “Medellín” innovative would be an overstatement, give Madge credit for surprising us, even at 60 years old.
Final Thoughts
Now, the question is, how good is “Medellín,” or is it good at all? Personally, I enjoyed the vibe given off by the record more than the song itself. That said it’s a record that improves with successive listens once you wrap your fingers around what Madonna is doing. As far as collaboration, she makes a wise choice in pairing with Maluma – they work well together. Also, this is a modern pop record, yet still captures the essence of the icon. It’s an interesting record to say the least.
