Macy Gray, known for her Grammy-winning pop megahit, “I Try,” returns with a superb new single, “Sugar Daddy,” her first offering of 2018.

Jumping right in, “Sugar Daddy” is ‘just what the doctor ordered,’ for both Macy Grayas well as R&B lovers.  Gray has one of the most distinctive voices in the entire music game – that’s not the least bit debatable. Selling her unique instrument effectively has been an issue for Gray, who should definitely be respected beyond her superb, Grammy-winning hit, “I Try”.  Post- On How Life Is– her most successful album – her career has been much more obscure, which is sad.  Can “Sugar Daddy” create a resurgence?

To reiterate, the assertion was made that “Sugar Daddy” is ‘just what the doctor ordered.’  Here’s why. The first reason is because it highlights the beauty and distinct tone of Gray’s voice.  She certainly sounds quite melodic.  While she may still may come off as an acquired taste to some, she sounds palatable.  Part of the reason for the appetizing nature of her performance is the fact that the record is somewhat novel.  It masterfully fuses retro soul, urban contemporary, and even a dash of pop for good measure.  Also, touched upon earlier, this is catchy record, benefiting from memorable songwriting.

Final Thoughts

Addressing the question at the end of the opening paragraph – Can “Sugar Daddy” create a resurgence? Anything is possible, but it’s hard to see Macy Gray come anywhere close to her glory days.  Still, she has a fine single on her hands thanks to great vocals, catchy songwriting, and production that highlights her strengths.
